چکیده

Infants typically exhibit a shift from unimanual to bimanual reaching toward the end of their first year, which has been linked to walking onset. Until now, however, it has been unclear whether it was the onset of walking per se that influenced reaching patterns or whether a more general shift to an upright posture might have prompted the reorganization of the motor system. To address this question, the current study longitudinally chronicled

Infants Return to Two - Handed Reaching

The authors examined whether infants of about I year return to 2-handed reaching when they begin to walk independently. Infants (N = 9) were followed longitudinally before, during, and after their transition to upright locomotion. Every week, the infants' reaching responses and patterns of interlimb coordination were screened in 3 tasks involving different adaptive reaching responses. Before th...

The Differences in Sensorimotor Rhythm Power During Performing In-Phase and Anti-Phase Patterns in Bimanual Coordination

Purpose: The sensorimotor cortex oscillations (frequency ranging between 12 and 15 Hz), commonly known as Sensorimotor Rhythm (SMR) has previously displayed a promising link between the performance of the visuomotor related to skill execution and part of psychology that is adaptive (e.g. the process linked attention which is automatic). This study examined the extent of SMR power in the executi...

Brain reorganization as a function of walking experience in 12-month-old infants: implications for the development of manual laterality

Hand preference in infancy is marked by many developmental shifts in hand use and arm coupling as infants reach for and manipulate objects. Research has linked these early shifts in hand use to the emergence of fundamental postural-locomotor milestones. Specifically, it was found that bimanual reaching declines when infants learn to sit; increases if infants begin to scoot in a sitting posture;...

Effect of Body Position on Physiological Alteration While Feeding Infants: A Systematic Review

Background: An infant should be able to coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing to have a safe and effective feeding, which is developed with the increasing gestational age. Any problem in each of these functions can lead to the risk of aspiration, pneumonia, decreased oxygenation saturation, apnea, and bradycardia. The changed body positions may cause changes in the physiological efficie...

Posture and gaze in early motherÿinfant communication: synchronization of developmental trajectories

Weekly laboratory observations of free play for 13 middle-income mother±infant dyads, from 1 to 6 months of age, were used to study the synchronization of developmental trajectories between infant postural position and gaze direction. Mothers sat in a straight-backed chair while holding infants on their laps and were free to adjust the infant's posture. Postural position was coded as upright (s...
